What’s New in Android 4.1 “Jelly Bean?”

During the first day of Google I/O, Google announced the next version of the Android operating system which will be titled “Jelly Bean.” What separates Jelly Bean from the other versions of Android? Let’s take a look.

  •  Project Butter Speed is certainly important in any operating system. Although, sometimes the illusion of speed is just as powerful. Google is aware of this and thus implemented “buttery smooth” transitions and animations into Jelly Bean. All animations will be displayed at 60 FPS and be played at a faster rate.
  • Google Now Google is now making your smart phone even smarter by implementing a service that will analyze your web history and location information to give you precise recommendations and information. For example, as you leave your home for work, Google Now will analyze traffic conditions and direct you to the rout that will get you to your destination the fastest. Although, I have to admit, having a service look at my web history and location info sounds a little scary.
  • Advanced Notifications Android has always had a fantastic notification system. With Jelly Bean, you can do even more without switching applications. For example, you can return a phone call, reply to an E-mail and send a text message to a friend without leaving the notification.

Google did mention some other, less significant additions to Android such as offline voice controls and new fonts, but I believe I have covered the majority of the new content. I must say, I am very impressed with these new features coming to Android. Then again, it will be interesting to see how long it takes for the majority of Android users to get their hands on Jelly Bean.

Jelly Bean is expected launch in mid-July. Although, the launch is likely to support a very slim amount of devices. Let’s hope Google can make up for ICS by getting the majority of Android user updated. Please feel free to share your opinion by leaving a comment or sending an E-mail to [email protected].
